I was born with hearing loss, but didn’t get hearing aids until I was 19 years old.
People noticed. I was the kid who didn’t respond, who laughed a little too late, who couldn’t quite follow the rules in class or the rhythm of the playground. But instead of asking what was wrong, they judged.
They called me defiant, disrespectful, daft.
I wasn’t any of those things. I just couldn’t hear.
